We as officers in the Defence Forces owe much to the foresight of Captains Bill O’Carroll and Jerome Counihan who in 1949, when seeing the plight of the widow of an officer in the 2 Infantry Battalion, Cathal Brugha Barracks, forced to raise a family on a pension that was a quarter of her officer husband’s salary, made a case to set up CAOGA.
Present
CAOGA today has moved with the times, but its primary goal remains unchanged, that is to protect the long term security of your family in the event of the death of a key family member. Bill O’Carroll intuitively stated that this Friendly Societies Benefit should not be a replacement for other insurance. His wishes came to pass with the setting up of the Group Life Assurance Plan in 1979.
The promotion of membership of the CAOGA Friendly Societies Scheme and the Group Life Assurance plan is a key goal of CAOGA today. We also provide other financial and welfare services such as relief of illness cover to those placed on half pay through illness and a benevolent fund for serving members.
Future
A primary goal of CAOGA is to adapt the rules of CAOGA so as to reflect changes and remain relevant to all officers regardless of age, sexual orientation or marital status.
